Suspect in custody after Philadelphia officer Shane Seiber is killed
A suspect is in custody after Philadelphia police officer Shane Seiber was killed and another officer was wounded during a shooting, officials said.
Philadelphia Police Officer Shane Seiber died after a shooting early Saturday, and a suspect is in custody. The incident also left another patrol officer wounded and hospitalized following surgery, officials said. The violence happened in west Philadelphia.
The officers responded to a report of a man with a gun, police said. Gunfire broke out during the call. Both officers suffered gunshot wounds.
Emergency crews transported both wounded officers to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Both underwent surgery at the facility. The surviving officer remains in stable condition, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.
A suspect is in custody, Bethel said. Seiber, 40, was a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department.
Gov. Josh Shapiro said he ordered flags to fly at half-mast for Seiber. Seiber is survived by his wife and two children. They include a 7-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl.
The Philadelphia Police Department investigates officer-involved shootings through specialized internal units. Prosecutors review the investigative findings to determine formal criminal charges.
No further details about the suspect were released by officials in Philadelphia.
