Delta College student faces hate crime charges in Stockton poster vandalism
Police in Stockton identified a Delta College student as a suspect facing hate crime charges for allegedly removing more than 20 campus LGBTQIA+ posters.
A 20-year-old student faces vandalism and hate crime charges in Stockton after campus poster removals, campus police announced. Investigators referred the case to prosecutors to hold the suspect accountable for targeting LGBTQIA+ displays. The first incidents occurred earlier this month.
The San Joaquin Delta College District Police Department identified the student as a suspect in October. Police clarified that the recent incidents are not believed to be linked to two earlier campus removals in early 2026. Those previous cases are not established as related to the October events.
Since Oct. 1, a suspect removed more than 20 Queer/LGBTQIA+ posters across campus, police said. Investigators reviewed security video to identify a possible suspect. No suspect names were released.
An officer monitored live footage just after 8 p.m. on Oct. 8. The officer witnessed the student removing posters in the Quad, Holt and Locke buildings. Officers quickly located the suspect.
Police turned the case over to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities requested vandalism and hate crime charges. Police stated that hate crimes will not be tolerated.
The current case follows earlier investigations on the Stockton campus. Officials with Delta College police said:
“In those investigations, Delta College police identified suspects, made arrests, and referred the cases to the District Attorney’s Office, where criminal charges have been filed.”
Police said the department defends constitutional expressions on campus. Police said:
“The District and Delta College police respect and protect the First Amendment rights of all students, employees, and community members, including the right to express opinions and viewpoints. Delta College police remain committed to protecting the rights and safety of everyone on our campuses.”
Officers do not believe any other suspects remain outstanding. The case is now moving through county review.
A district attorney reviews police evidence to determine if formal charges proceed to court. Campus police forces hold jurisdiction over college properties to maintain safety. Students facing criminal allegations may also undergo administrative disciplinary procedures.
The alleged offenses took place across educational buildings in Stockton. Officers continue regular patrols across the grounds.
