A rollover wreck on Interstate 80 injured two people in Placer County. The collision caused traffic backups along the freeway, California Highway Patrol announced.

The crash happened on eastbound I-80 just east of Newcastle Road, according to officials. A Chevrolet Silverado and a semi-truck collided on the roadway.

Officials said the Silverado driver made an “unsafe turning movement.” The pickup then hit the front tire of the semi-truck.

The Silverado veered off the road. It traveled up an embankment. It overturned and landed in the No. 3 lane.

The male driver was trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency personnel extricated him, officials said. He suffered major injuries.

A female passenger sustained what appeared to be minor injuries, officials said. The Placer County collision remains under investigation.

The California Highway Patrol manages traffic enforcement on state freeways. Officers routinely secure collision scenes to assist rescue crews.

Officials said motorists should use alternate routes. Drivers in Placer County should expect delays and exercise caution.
