An 18-year-old accused of opening fire in downtown Albuquerque will remain behind bars as his case heads toward trial, a district judge has decided.
Isaiah Martinez is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center following a pretrial detention hearing in Bernalillo County. Second Judicial District Judge Emeterio Rudolfo issued the order after prosecutors argued that Martinez poses an ongoing danger to the public.
The early-morning shooting began, police say, with a street dispute. A ShotSpotter alert recorded 17 gunshots near Central Avenue and 8th Street NW, and officers found a man badly wounded; he was taken to a trauma center in critical condition.
Court documents say Martinez and 18-year-old Matthew Akugue got into a vehicle after the argument and approached the victim near the roundabout at Central and 8th. Police allege Martinez fired multiple rounds from the car at close range. Detectives later took both into custody.
The case proceeds through the Second Judicial District Court, where formal indictments and trial preparations are underway.
