A vehicle caught fire Monday morning on State Route 99 in Elk Grove. The incident closed freeway travel lanes and slowed commuter traffic in the area. The California Highway Patrol reported expected traffic backups following the blaze.

Around 6:33 a.m., CHP announced a lane closure on the southbound freeway at Elk Grove Boulevard. The burning automobile blocked both southbound lanes. Officers diverted moving traffic toward the center divide.

The motorist exited safely. The driver was outside the vehicle, according to CHP.

Lanes were opened around 7:37 a.m., CHP said. Traffic resumed normal patterns.

The California Highway Patrol oversees traffic safety on state highways and manages roadway emergencies. Officers divert traffic when disabled vehicles block travel lanes.

Emergency crews cleared the scene in Elk Grove before morning commute delays extended further.
