Federal agents searched the Washington home of Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday in an ongoing criminal probe. The action marks a major step in a federal inquiry involving the Minnesota lawmaker.

The Justice Department confirmed agents executed a court-authorized search warrant in the Washington, D.C. area. Agency officials declined to give specific details about the matter.

“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

Personnel with Homeland Security Investigations conducted the morning entry, according to reports. Homeland Security Investigations operates as the investigative branch of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed a federal criminal inquiry involving Omar nearly a month ago.

Homeland Security Investigations reviews cross-border crime and enforcement matters for the federal government. Court-authorized warrants require federal agents to establish probable cause before a judge. Agents then submit seized material to prosecutors for further review.

The inquiry in Washington remains active. No charges were announced.
