A roller coaster incident in Austell left one person dead and several injured Monday afternoon, police said. Detectives launched an inquiry immediately to determine what occurred on the ride. The deadly event took place at Six Flags Over Georgia.

Officials did not confirm how the person died. They also did not state what caused the other injuries. Detectives with the Cobb County Police Department major crimes unit will investigate the matter.

The theme park sits about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta. A Six Flags spokesperson said the park and local authorities responded immediately to the scene. The spokesperson added that staff members are cooperating with detectives.

“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today,” the spokesperson said.

Other theme parks have seen legal actions over rides. Last month, Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California announced the retirement of the X2 roller coaster. Lawsuits alleged serious brain injuries from that ride.

Six Flags recently settled a wrongful-death lawsuit from the family of a 22-year-old man. That man died following a ride on the coaster in 2022. Three more lawsuits alleging traumatic brain injuries were filed last week.

Last year, a 32-year-old man died from blunt impact injuries at Universal Epic Universe in Florida. The event followed a ride on a high-speed roller coaster. Officials ruled that death accidental.

Major crimes units typically review fatal incidents in Austell to establish physical evidence and inspect mechanical systems. Inquiries often involve park operations staff and local emergency personnel.

Police have released no identities. The investigation remains ongoing.
