American dream now costs $5.3M amid surging US prices
The lifetime cost of the American Dream has reached $5.3 million across the US, driven by steep increases in housing and raising children, a report shows.
A new report reveals that life milestones across the country now carry an estimated price tag of $5.3 million. That figure shows many everyday goals are moving further out of reach for working families nationwide. A single paycheck reportedly will not come close to covering that total expense.
The lifetime estimate is reportedly up by 4% from last year, according to a report from Investopedia. That overall total includes several common family milestones:
- Owning a home
- Buying new cars
- Raising two children and sending them to college
- Retiring comfortably
- Paying for health care
- Having a wedding
- Owning pets
- Taking a yearly vacation
Home ownership, vehicles and retirement expenses make up nearly 70% of the entire bill. Owning a home now costs $1,275,782 across the country. That housing cost rose from $1,184,493 last year.
Doug Flynn, a founding partner of Flynn Zito Capital Management, discussed the rising figures on “NewsNation Live.” Flynn said the biggest percentage increase involves the overall cost of raising children.
Raising two children and sending them to college costs $953,763, the report found. That marks an increase from $876,092 in 2025.
Public confidence remains high despite the steep numbers. A new Gallup poll found that 69% of Americans still believe they will achieve these life goals.
Financial research groups calculate these figures by tracking typical consumer expenses across multiple decades of adult life. The models combine long-term inflation figures with median spending patterns for household needs.
Federal agencies track price shifts across consumer goods to monitor broad changes for families in the country.
