Samuel Enderwick Hartbower pleads not guilty in Marysville Save Mart stabbing
Samuel Enderwick Hartbower pleaded not guilty to murder in a Marysville court following a fatal stabbing at a local Save Mart grocery store.
Samuel Enderwick Hartbower pleaded not guilty to murder Tuesday in Marysville during an arraignment in Yuba County court. He faces a life sentence for murder and other counts including assault with a deadly weapon. The 33-year-old Yuba City resident entered pleas to all charges filed in the case.
A judge denied bail to Hartbower. The ruling came at the request of Yuba County District Attorney Clint Curry.
Initial evidence shows Hartbower attacked assistant manager Doug Eid with a knife, Curry said in a news release. Hartbower reportedly received a request to leave the Save Mart store before the knife attack occurred.
Eid, 64, died from his injuries. Bystander Robert Balderaz saw the violence and stepped in to help. Hartbower allegedly stabbed Balderaz during that intervention.
Balderaz went to a local hospital. He suffered lacerations that required stitches. Other shoppers stopped the fleeing suspect.
They held the man on site. Marysville police arrived at the scene Sunday afternoon.
An arraignment is the initial court appearance where a defendant hears formal charges and enters a plea. Murder charges in California trigger a pretrial process to determine evidence sufficiency.
Hartbower will return to court for his next hearing on Nov. 14 in Marysville.
