A man has died in Doncaster after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, police said. The park was evacuated following the attack.
A man died Saturday after entering a big cat pen near Doncaster, police said. The incident triggered an evacuation and emergency medical response. What led the man to access the pen remains unestablished.
Emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene following a report at about 1:35 p.m. South Yorkshire Police said the victim died at the scene.
The tiger was not hurt. It stayed inside the space during the incident, according to a police statement.
The park cleared out visitors following the attack. Officers stayed at the Doncaster site Saturday night to run an investigation.
“We are working closely with the authorities to ascertain exactly what happened,” Yorkshire Wildlife Park said in a website statement.
The site opened in 2009. It added its “Land of the Tigers” attraction in 2011.
The reserve spans two acres for endangered Amur tigers, also called Siberian tigers. A 300-meter walkway lets guests view the cats in woodlands, grasslands, or a pool, the website states.
Zoological facilities follow safety protocols to separate dangerous predators from the visiting public. Police investigations examine security perimeters and access routes during fatal workplace and visitor incidents in Doncaster.
Police have not released the victim’s identity.
