Democrats lead generic congressional ballot by 7 points in new poll
Democrats hold a 49 to 42 percent lead over Republicans in a new NewsNation and Decision Desk HQ generic congressional ballot poll of likely voters.
Democrats hold a seven-point lead over Republicans in a new national survey released on Tuesday. The result points to a friendly environment for Democrats three weeks before Election Day.
The NewsNation-Decision Desk HQ survey showed Democrats leading Republicans 49 percent to 42 percent. A separate eight percent of voters remain undecided.
AI research platform TrueDot.ai conducted the work between Oct. 5 and Oct. 9. The group surveyed 974 likely national voters. The survey carries a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.

Voters were asked which party has done more to earn their vote. Democrats took 46 percent. Republicans took 40 percent.
Close to seven percent chose Independents. Another eight percent chose none of the above.
The survey results will air on Decision Desk 2026 Have Your Say: A NewsNation Town Hall. Chris Cuomo hosts the broadcast on Tuesday night.
Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel will discuss the numbers. Broadcaster Stephen A. Smith and former Trump strategist Steve Bannon will join him.
Recent polling shows Democrats holding a steady edge on congressional ballots. Forecasters expect the party to take back the House in November.
Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats a 76 percent probability of winning the House. The group gives Republicans a 24 percent probability of keeping it.
“The big question is if the lead grows more,” said Geoffrey Skelley, chief elections analyst at DDHQ.
Time is running short.
“You’re basically out of time for much to change. At this point, it is probably more just about engaging the voters in your party as best you can, and making some final cases to voters who might normally or might have in the past voted for your party, if you’re Republicans in particular, and then trying to make the case for why they should show up again.”
The poll found President Donald Trump with a 38 percent favorable rating. His unfavorable rating reached 60 percent.
Voters ranked their most urgent issues facing the country:
- Inflation at 28 percent
- Jobs and the economy at 20 percent
- Immigration and the border at 12 percent
Trump recently reached a deal with Russia. The agreement pumps 300,000 tons of diesel to global markets. Skelley said he was very skeptical that the move would sway voters.
The Russian diesel deal caused bipartisan backlash. Americans do not necessarily view Russia favorably, Skelley said.
Observers view the fight for the Senate as a toss-up. Democrats need to flip four seats to win control. They face tough contests in Ohio, Alaska, Iowa and Texas.
Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats a 56 percent chance to flip the Senate. Republicans hold a 44 percent chance of retaining control.
A generic ballot test asks voters which party they back without naming candidates. Campaign organizations use these measures to track nationwide voter sentiment ahead of midterm elections.
Voters will settle control of both chambers of Congress on Election Day.
