Crews halted a fast-moving vegetation blaze Monday afternoon in Stanislaus County. The rapid response protected nearby rural acreage from further damage.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Flames ignited at 1:12 p.m. east of Milton Road near Rock Creek Road. That location sits near the Calaveras County line, according to the CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit.

The blaze grew rapidly in dry conditions. It reached 100 acres within an hour. Officials said its forward progress was stopped just after 2 p.m. The flames burned more than 100 acres in total.

Firefighters plan to stay in Stanislaus County for several hours, according to CAL FIRE. Personnel will work along the perimeter. Crews will extinguish any remaining hotspots across the burned area.

State wildland agencies deploy local engines and air support to contain fast-moving rural fires. Fire crews routinely patrol burn zones after containment to prevent flare-ups. Investigators then examine the point of origin to determine how a wildfire began.

Fire crews remained on scene Monday afternoon near the Calaveras County border. No damage or injuries were reported.
