Two unidentified women died early Monday morning inside a burning house in Philadelphia’s East Mount Airy neighborhood. Authorities say both victims suffered gunshot wounds to the head before emergency crews found them.

Firefighters responded to the 8200 block of Williams Avenue around 4 a.m. Crews discovered a fire in the kitchen. Multiple people were inside the house.

Firefighters pulled two women out of the burning property. Medics rushed them to Einstein Medical Center. Staff there pronounced both women dead.

Officials say both victims appeared to have gunshot wounds to the head. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims. Officials have not shared additional details about the deaths.

Roughly an hour later, officers responded to another incident at around 5 a.m. That call sent them to the 7900 block of Oxford Avenue for an armed man. Police said a man with a gun refused to leave a Route 18 SEPTA bus.

Authorities said the suspect could be connected to the double homicide on Williams Avenue. No one else was on the bus with him, according to authorities. Police asked the public to avoid the area.

Double homicide investigations involve both fire marshals and police homicide detectives. Specialists gather forensic evidence from burned crime scenes. Investigators also review transit movements across the city.

The investigation remains ongoing in East Mount Airy.
