Donald Trump weighs renaming Atlantic or Pacific Ocean at Tennessee rally
At a Tennessee rally, Donald Trump said he is considering renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean to "Trump Ocean" or the "Ocean of the America."
President Donald Trump said in Tennessee he is considering renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. He floated names such as “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the America” during a Saturday public rally. The statements follow his earlier efforts to rebrand major geographical features.
Trump spoke to a crowd at the Tennessee event. He reviewed previous renaming actions.
“So, we need a river, we need an ocean. So, I was thinking of either the Atlantic or the Pacific. We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the America,’ something like that.”
In late August, Trump signed an executive order targeting Lake Ontario. He changed its formal name to “Lake America.” The action occurred during trade tensions with Canada.
“We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America,” Trump told reporters at that time.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney opposed the change. He posted about the Indigenous history of the name on the social platform X.
“The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,’” Carney wrote.
Last year, Trump targeted another body of water. He signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
Executive orders direct federal operations. Presidential rallies in Tennessee often serve as venues for policy discussions.
Trump did not announce an official order for the oceans. He floated the proposal to supporters.
