Nightly traffic shutdowns will hit Interstate 5 near Sacramento International Airport through late November. Crews will remove and replace bridge pavement along the busy Yolo Bypass corridor. The California Department of Transportation announced the roadwork on Wednesday.

Work takes place on the bridge north of the Sacramento River. Caltrans said the project requires closing one direction at a time “for workers’ and motorists’ safety.”

Northbound lanes will shut from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. from Oct. 11 through Oct. 31. Officials said this initial phase should not delay travelers catching scheduled flights. Speed limits drop to 55 mph.

Southbound lanes will shut from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. from Nov. 1 through Nov. 20. This second phase affects drivers traveling south from the Woodland area to the airport. Caltrans encouraged travelers to allow extra time to reach SMF.

Caltrans established two detours for motorists. Local drivers can take a short diversion along County Road 22. Officials urged commercial truckers to follow State route 113 and Interstate 80.

Caltrans manages state highway maintenance and schedules roadway repairs across regional travel networks. Work zones require lower speed limits and diversions to ensure safe operations for road crews. Designated detour corridors help guide local drivers and commercial freight through active construction zones.

Officials cautioned that the truck detour will cause extended travel times. Travelers heading through Sacramento should plan their routes in advance.
