Rian Shelstead arrested in Auburn on felony drug charges
Auburn police arrested Rian Shelstead on felony drug charges after the man allegedly asked officers if he could snort the methamphetamine found on him.
Police in Auburn took Rian Shelstead into custody Wednesday on felony narcotics allegations. Officers booked him into the Placer County Jail following a search for illicit substances.
The Auburn Police Department received a report just after 5 a.m. A caller reported a male who was “tweaking badly” on the 300 block of Elm Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene.
Police contacted Shelstead and noted behavior matching central nervous system stimulant use. Shelstead was on post-release community supervision for drug-related offenses. A search uncovered methamphetamine and a glass smoking pipe.
The discovery led to a felony charge because of Shelstead’s prior offenses. He made a request before transport. “Let me snort it,” Shelstead said, referring to the methamphetamine.
Post-release community supervision provides county monitoring for people with qualifying criminal records. Local police officers handle public drug complaints and safety calls. Arraignment hearings typically follow felony bookings in criminal court.
Placer County Jail officials processed Shelstead on the narcotics allegation Wednesday. He remained in custody following the incident in Auburn.
