Congressional candidate Mai Vang faces criticism from her opponent over an upcoming event in Sacramento. The dispute highlights tensions between progressives and moderate Democrats competing for a seat in the U.S. House.

Vang is challenging Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui in California’s 7th Congressional District. The local city council member recently received endorsements from progressive congressional candidates.

Vang plans to appear on a fundraising stream with Hasan Piker. Her campaign confirmed the event is set for Oct. 14.

Vang said she will talk to people frustrated by corrupt establishment leaders. She described Piker’s audience as young, engaged, and ready to vote.

Piker is a political commentator and streamer who campaigned with Michigan candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Some moderate Democrats have criticized Piker for past statements regarding Israel.

Roger Salazar, a senior advisor to Matsui, condemned Vang’s alignment with Piker. He called Piker an anti-American and anti-Semitic clout chaser.

Salazar said Matsui remains focused on lowering living costs and restoring healthcare. Piker did not respond to requests for comment.

CBS News reported Piker previously defended his past remarks online. Piker wrote that anti-Zionism is distinct from antisemitism.

Vang responded by criticizing Matsui for focusing on media appearances. She argued the incumbent ignores families struggling with rent and groceries.

California uses a top-two primary system where the highest vote-getters advance. Candidates on the ballot participate in campaigns before facing voters in the general election.

Both Democrats advanced from the primary election to the November ballot. Voters across Sacramento will decide the race in the general election.
