Three adults and one child lost their living space in a Modesto blaze on Monday afternoon. Emergency crews worked to stop the flames from spreading further into the neighborhood.

Crews from the Modesto Fire Department and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire went to the 200 block of Phoenix Avenue. They arrived around 4 p.m. One house was fully ablaze upon arrival.

Flames also damaged two neighboring houses. More than 40 firefighters responded to the scene, Modesto Fire said. Nearly triple-digit temperatures made it harder for crews to contain the flames.

Relief agencies typically coordinate basic necessities for victims following major residential blazes. Investigators examine charred structures to determine how incidents begin.

The Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the Modesto incident. Displaced residents will receive assistance from the American Red Cross.
