Two people died Tuesday following a traffic collision on State Route 99 in Sutter County. Emergency crews rushed two other injured individuals to area hospitals for medical care. The cause remains under active investigation.

Officers responded south of Howsley Road around 5:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators said a southbound sedan crossed the lanes and a dirt median into northbound traffic. The sedan hit an oncoming sports utility vehicle head-on.

The sedan overturned into a ditch. The driver and front passenger of the sedan died at the scene. Emergency crews airlifted a backseat passenger with major injuries to UC Davis Medical Center.

The California Highway Patrol investigates fatal collisions on state routes across Sutter County. Officers document vehicle damage and scene evidence during major highway inquiries.

The sports utility vehicle driver sustained minor injuries, the CHP said. Responders took that driver to a local hospital for treatment.
